Yet another tale of parental responsibility gone bad today friends.
Before I share this tale I want to state that the crime of rape is, to my mind, one of the most horrific crimes that any man can commit and that the penalties assigned to it are woefully inadequate retribution for the victims. It is a crime of subjection, not of sex and should be treated with great seriousness.
Now with that in mind, I bring you the tale of a 16 year old University of Portland student who is suing the school after she was allegedly raped after a night of drinking in a mens dormitory. Four months following the following the alleged rape, which occurred in October of 2007, the girl went to authorities after she became the victim of cyber-bullying on the social networking site Facebook.
She is now suing the university for $1 million dollars in damages.
Well friends, I guess it is up to me to ask the hard questions in this case.
First to come to mind is…What the hell is a 16 year old girl doing drinking in a men’s dorm to begin with?
The girl is an advanced placement student at the university and I am assuming lives on campus, so, where the hell are her parents. Am I really expected to believe that the girl was judged to be mature enough to live independently on campus by her folks, and allowed, at 16 to wander around on her own.
Now, the suit contends that the girl was unable to give consent to sex due to her age and level of intoxication, and I agree, but it seems to me that it is her parents who are culpable for her being placed in this position, not the school.
I also found it telling that the girl failed to report the rape until after she found a picture of herself on Facebook with a caption alluding to the assault. She posted a comment requesting the identity of the poster and then, the suit alleges she was inundated with comments calling her a “slut”, “nasty” and “much worse”. It was this activity that prompted the girl to report the assault.
Now I will admit that the response by school authorities may have been lacking. When the girl reported the alleged assault to the university public safety department, Police were not notified, nor was rape counseling offered to the girl. Law enforcement officials became involved after the girls parents sought legal advice on their suit, yet, and the reasons are not made clear, Portland Police decided not to investigate. School officials, the suit contends, restricted the girls movements on campus and allowed her alleged attacker to roam freely.
While the school and Portland Police both refused comment to the reporter writing the story, citing the age of the victim and the nature of the crime, it does not take much of an imagination to read between the lines and see the story for what it is.
Typical teen girl decides it will be fun to party with the big kids and while drunk has sex with an older school mate, more then likely the sex was consensual in all but the legal definition. Girl becomes offended when she is ridiculed for her behavior and then goes into “victim” mode. School Officials and police see the event for what it was and react in a manner they deem appropriate given the facts available.
The parents, who believe that “their little girl” could never be a willing participant in such activities decide it must be the schools fault.
We will just ignore the fact that, no matter how high the test scores, a 16 year old girl is still a 16 year old girl, and it was HER PARENTS who put her in a situation she was not mature enough to handle. If a 16 year old girl is smart enough to benefit from college level education, she should be able to pursue it, but to allow her to live, unsupervised, on campus?
Well friends, to my mind, that is the definition of child endangerment.
Should her alleged attacker pay? Maybe.
Should the other students who denigrated her of Facebook pay? Probably.
When are you people going to get ANGRY enough to contact your elected representatives and tell them enough is enough.
Website TMZ.com is reporting yet another bank has gone on a spending spree with OUR money.
“Northern Trust, a Chicago-based bank, sponsored the Northern Trust Open at the Riviera Country Club in L.A. We’re told Northern Trust paid millions to sponsor the PGA event which ended Sunday, but what happenedoffthe golf course is even more shocking.”
Among the “legitimate business expenses” racked up by Norther Trust;
Northern Trust hosted a fancy dinner at the Ritz followed by a performance by the group Chicago.
Northern Trust rented a private hangar at the Santa Monica Airport for dinner, followed by a performance by Earth, Wind & Fire.
Northern Trust had the entire House of Blues in West Hollywood shut down for its private party. Dinner was followed by a performance by none other than Sheryl Crow.
Gift bags from Tiffany were also given to all the attendees, who were put up in LA’s swankiest hotels.
Now in a prepared statement, NW Trust assured everybody that all the money was spent to raise money for charity. Hey, don’t ask me to explain it. You can read their response to TMZ here.
All I want to know is, where was my invite to the party. Im a stockholder. The government used 1.6 billion dollars of my money to buy preferred stock.
Now, I never went to business school, but wouldn’t have writing a nice fat check directly to the charities have accomplished the same thing without having to spend all that money on parties.
Once more, the truly ignorant among us have chosen The Oregonian Op/Ed page to air their views.
Yes, I am speaking of you Cindy Gotlib.
Now Cindy decided to share her feelings regarding the case of Jeffery Maxwell, a decorated Marine Corp veteran, who was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon on the campus of Western Oregon University. Jeffery has a concealed carry permit and was arrested because the school has it’s own rule banning weapons from campus.
Now this is what Cindy has to say on the subject;
If Jeffrey Maxwell wants to walk around with a loaded gun, I think he should go back into the Marines. A college (or any school) campus is no place for a loaded gun. Haven’t we all learned that lesson in the last 10 years?
If Maxwell feels threatened enough to carry a loaded gun, he should not be on a school campus. I certainly wouldn’t want my son or daughter on campus knowing someone (ex-Marine or not) was walking around with a loaded gun. Who knows? “That one nut” may just be Maxwell.
Cindy, Cindy, Cindy.
If there is ANYTHING the last ten years has taught us is that an armed man, trained in the use of a weapon, could prevent senseless tragedies like Virginia Tech. Tell me Cindy, if Mr. Maxwell was say, an armed campus security officer, ex-Marine or not, would you still not want your child to go to school there?
I for one would rather have an armed Jeffery Maxwell on campus then a half dozen trained security officers or police for the simple reason that our friend Jeff has seen combat, he has been shot at already, and he will be able to react better then an officer that has never “seen the elephant”.
So Cindy, while I applaud the strength of your convictions, I question the logic behind them.
Jeff Maxwell has been deemed good enough to have been honorably discharged from The United States Marines. He has been judged competent by the Sheriff of his county of residence to carry a concealed weapon in keeping with Oregon state law. He has been trained by our armed forces in the use of deadly force.
I don’t know if this is going on in state houses around the country, but here in Oregon, sin is definitely in.
So called sin taxes, on beer, cigarettes and other luxury items seem to be the only way that lawmakers can come up with to raise much needed funds in this era of fiscal disaster.
I guess my question is, why?
Why subject a small segment of the population to increased taxes on items they enjoy.
I’ll tell you why.
Because taxes cost more then money, they cost votes.
Take Oregon for instance.
Here in the Micro Brew Capitol, we enjoy a relatively low tax on beer and wine. So, to the lawmakers way of thinking, lets get the beer drinkers to fund programs for alcohol addiction and diversion through a higher beer tax. Seems like a no brainer, right? Well let me ask you this, is that drunk driver going to only cream a beer drinker? Can we guarantee that they will only slam their cars into wine bars?
No. Drunk drivers are a danger to everyone, so everyone should assume the responsibility for paying.
Except that no one wants to pay for it.
Everyone wants better roads, more money for schools and teachers, more cops on the streets, but everyone thinks everyone else should pay for it. The thinking goes, “Well, I am a better person because I don’t drink or smoke, so let those evil people pay my way.” Well guess what, those evil people are your friends and neighbors.
Lets not kid ourselves, everyone is going to bite the bullet to get through this economic downturn.
I refuse to believe that the best way to fund our state is through ridiculous “sin” taxes that penalize the few to pay for the many.
I would rather see our legislature push through a temporary, say 2-3 year state sales tax then have the burden placed on the shoulders of a small segment of our population.
But Hell, that is not going to happen. Any politician who puts forth a proposal that taxes everyone equally, like a sales tax, is committing political suicide. It’s just the way we are in this country.
Greedy little pig minded fucks who think some else is responsible for their actions and who fail to see any reason why the should not pass the buck to some other guy.
…before you string my ass up, I am not the one making this claim.
I am sitting on the couch the other day, watching something or other on HULU.com, when an ad for the Clearblue digital home pregnancy test comes on.
The opening line in the ad is…
Did you know 1 in 4 woman can not read a pregnancy test?
The ad goes on to extol the virtues of THEIR test, in which the word Pregnant appears if the test is positive.
All I need to know is…
You mean to tell me that one in four women out there can not tell the difference between a + sign and a – sign. Come on now, really? Is this a product you need? Are these tests that difficult to understand?
I mean, I am only a man here, but if someone insinuated that 1 in 4 of my people were morons, I would be breaking out the pitchforks and torches.
You have to hand it to the Japanese. They are masters of tapping markets that most of us would not have even dreamt existed.
Take this product I came across the other day.
For only $14.95, any man with a willing partner can now enjoy the pleasure (?) of deflowering a virgin, and ladies, you will, regardless of age or experience, be able to pass yourselves as pure as the virgin snow. That’s right friends, now available in The United States, The Artificial Virginity Hymen.
Here is the actual ad copy that goes along with the product:
No more worry about losing your virginity. With this product, you can have your first night back anytime. Insert this artificial hymen into your vagina carefully. It will expand a little and make you feel tight. When your lover penetrate, it will ooze out a liquid that look like blood not too much but just the right amount. Add in a few moans and groans, you will pass through undetectable. Its easy to use, clinically proven non-toxic to human and has no side effects, no pain to use and no allergic reaction.
Well there you have it…straight from the country that sells used school girl panties in vending machines.
I am not going to link to the site offering this item for sale, if your twisted enough to want to order it, find it yourself.
One slip of the tongue and you can be in deep shit.
Just ask Sen Diane Feinstein (D), Ca., head of the Senate Intelligence Committee.
While briefing the new Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair, Feinstein let slip that the United States has been flying Predator strikes from bases located in Pakistan.
“Mr. Holbrooke, in Pakistan, ran into considerable concern about the use of the Predator strikes in the FATA area of Pakistan,” Feinstein said to Blair, referring to Richard Holbrooke, President Obama’s special envoy to Pakistan and Afghanistan. “And yet, as I understand it, these are flown out of a Pakistani base.”
Reporters latched onto the statement and placed the government in a position where it had to admit that the US had in fact been operating, despite denials from Pakistani officials, inside the country since at least 2006.
The acknowledgment that the Pakistanis not only are turning a blind eye to U.S. operations in their territory, but also are lending a hand by supplying a staging area could create political problems for the fragile government of President Asif Ali Zardari. The U.S. was permitted to use Shamsi to launch attacks on Al Qaeda in Afghanistan shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks in the U.S.
Way to go, Diane.
You see, the problem here is not the security of the base or it’s personnel. I would not be at all surprised if Al Queda and the Taliban not only knew we were operating out of the base, but had informants actually on the base. I am sure the military is aware of the same things.
What she has done is undermine our relationship with a nation critical to our success if we are to make any kind of headway in our operations in Afghanistan. Removing the cloak of deniability from an already shaky regime all but guarantees that when we need them most, the Pakistanis, under pressure from their own populace, are going to give our forces the boot.
I guess what surprises me most is the failure of The Democrats to plug the leak and give Feinstein the boot from the Intelligence committee. If anything, she has proven that she does not have the ability to handel sensitive information. If we loose that base, and our soldiers loose their lives because of it, their blood is on your hands Diane.
One would think that without the follies of King George II to provide a cover for their nonsensical activities, Conservative republicans would lay low and pick their battles a little more carefully.
All I can say is thank god they are not, after all, what would I be left to write about if everyone started making sense all of a sudden.
I have to admit i was a little surprised not to see the conservative movement come out in support of Octumom. after all, isn’t she the poster child of the whole neo-con, anti abortion, religious right. !4 kids and making the heroic struggle to raise them on her own.
OK, so not entirely on her own.
Just her and her mom.
OK, just her, her mom, and Federally subsidised welfare.
OK, just her, her mom, the feds and people donating to her web site.
Well, at least she has vowed to abstain from sex till the brood is grown.
Not that abstinence works according to Bristol Palin, daughter of the former VP candidate we all would have liked to see do a spread in Playboy. I do like the fact that she sprang the fact she was going to do an interview on mom at the last minute. It was almost refreshing to hear a prominent teen actually say out loud what everyone EXCEPT The Right already knows…Abstinence and teenagers does not work.
And I guess it is only fair the our Sarah does everything she can to stay in the spotlight. It is a shame she can’t seem to do it without it blowing up in her face. The other day she was kvetching and kvelling about how unfair it was, the way she was treated by Katie Couric and Tina Fey. Hell Sarah, I would be more worried about the ads your own PAC is running.
Sorry sweetie, but having Tina fey do you on Saturday Night Live pales in comparison to this tripe. What are we thanking you for, guaranteeing that John McCain lost the election?
Well, I guess it is all designed to keep your name in the public mind when the 2012 elections come along. God forbid you guys give it a rest until 2010 before you start campaigning. As I wrote this, Republican Governors in several states are stating publicly that they are considering refusing federal bail-out funds because of their “principals”. It has been widely reported that most of this grumbling has been political posturing from Presidential hopefuls.
Great move guys. Denying money to your constituents. That will keep you in the voters hearts when election time rolls around, trust me.
I could go on and on, but I think you all get the general idea. Maybe, and I am saying this out of love, you guys backed off a little and regrouped instead of charging in, spouting quotes from your pill popping prophet Rush Limbaugh and reinforcing the American peoples opinion that you are only in this to shove your ultra conservative agenda down our collective throats, you might just have a shot next time around.
